Phase I of the programme has been completed and a much more ambitious Phase II of the programme is ongoing -- the number of courses will touch around 500. Roughly, each video course consists of around 40 lectures, each around 50 minutes long. Many of the lectures are now available online through the <a href="http://nptel.iitm.ac.in/">NPTEL website</a> as well as <a href="http://youtube.com/iitm">YouTube</a>. Most of the lectures are given by faculty members of IIT's/IISc and other institutions from India. It would be interesting to see its impact in the long run. The spirit of the programme is similar to <a href="http://ocw.mit.edu/">MIT Open Courseware</a> and in a sense, complements what is on offer there.<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=";font-family:'Book Antiqua','Times New Roman';font-size:12px;" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=";font-family:'Book Antiqua','Times New Roman';font-size:100%;" ><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:12px;"><br /></span></span></div>Suresh Govindarajanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05624131769680226369noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7135078725005021288.post-68070256476178870582010-06-03T11:49:00.000-07:002010-06-06T00:07:14.361-07:00Preparatory SERC School in THEP -- Oct 20 - Nov 15, 2010<div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=";font-family:helvetica,arial,sans-serif;font-size:100%;" ><pre style=";font-family:monospace;font-size:9pt;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="white-space: normal;font-family:helvetica,arial,sans-serif;" ><pre><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">Dear Colleagues,</span></span></span></div></pre></span></pre></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size:100%;">It is a great pleasure for us to announce the Preparatory <a href="http://thep-serc.wikidot.com/">SERC School in Theoretical High Energy Physics</a> to be held during </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" >October 20 to November 15, 2010</span><span style="font-size:100%;"> at the </span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" >Birla Institute of Techonology and Sciences, K K Birla Goa Campus, Goa.</span><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span></div><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">This school will have the following courses:</span></span></div></span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=";font-family:helvetica,arial,sans-serif;font-size:100%;" ><pre style=";font-family:monospace;font-size:9pt;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="white-space: normal;font-family:helvetica,arial,sans-serif;" ><pre><span class="Apple-style-span"><div style="text-align: justify;"><ol><li><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">Quantum Field Theory</span></span></li><li><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">Statistical methods in Physics</span></span></li><li><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">Group Theory</span></span></li><li><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">Particle Physics and the Standard Model</span></span></li><li><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">The General theory of Relativity</span></span></li></ol></div></span></pre></span></pre></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:100%;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">Applications are invited from graduate students/teachers working for their Ph.D. degrees in Theoretical High Energy Physics. He was admitted to the hospital the previous evening at 10:30pm. Hospital scans revealed that he had a tumor in his brain and that may have been the cause of his untimely and unexpected passing away at a very young age. He had recently joined <a href="http://niser.ac.in/">NISER, Bhubaneswar</a> as a faculty member and was excited about having to teach quantum mechanics during the coming semester. He is survived by his wife. Our sincere and heartfelt condolences are to his immediate family. He will also be missed by all his friends like me.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">A bit about Jaydeep:</span> Jaydeep did his B.Sc. (1994) and M.Sc. (1996) in Physics from Calcutta university and then joined the Ph.D. programme at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI) after spending a semester at Tata Institute (TIFR) in Mumbai. He completed his Ph.D. in 2001/2 under the supervision of Prof. Ashoke Sen. Subsequently, he did post-docs at Rutgers and the Helsinki Institute of Physics. He then joined MNNIT, Allahabad as an Assistant Professor in 2008 before moving to NISER, Bhubaneswar in June 2009. His research in the recent past has been in the area of cosmology. His publications are listed in the <a href="http://www.slac.stanford.edu/spires/find/hep/www?rawcmd=a+j.majumder">SPIRES database</a>.Suresh Govindarajanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05624131769680226369noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7135078725005021288.post-40717714275012164842009-07-22T23:58:00.000-07:002009-07-23T03:42:55.928-07:004th Asian Winter School on Strings, Particles and Cosmology<span style="font-style: italic;"></span><br />The 4th Asian Winter School on Strings, Particles and Cosmology is to be held in Mahabaleswar, Maharashtra, during January 11-20, 2010.<br /><br />This School is being organized as a program of the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences of TIFR.
